Why Our Free Reverse Image Search Is Better Than TinEye for Most Photo Lookup Tasks

TinEye has been around since 2008. It was the first consumer-facing reverse image search engine, and it pioneered a lot of the techniques that the rest of the industry now uses. We have a lot of respect for the team behind it. But for most people doing a photo lookup in 2026, TinEye is no longer the best choice — and we say that as people who still use it regularly.

What TinEye is still great at

TinEye's killer feature has always been tracking. When TinEye finds a match, it tells you the oldest version it knows about and the full list of places the image has appeared. That's genuinely useful for:

• Copyright investigations. Proving a stock photo was used without license.
• Finding the original source. Tracing a photo back to where it was first published.
• Detecting image reuse. Catching blog posts that have recycled an image without credit.

For these jobs, TinEye is still the best. Nothing else gives you that level of historical detail for free.

Where TinEye falls short

The problem is that TinEye's database is small relative to Google or Yandex. TinEye has indexed somewhere around 50 billion images. Google has indexed the entire public web multiple times over. If your image isn't in TinEye's index — which is most modern images — TinEye returns nothing, and there's no indication of why.

That's the fundamental trade-off TinEye has made. The team has prioritized precision (every match is a real match) over recall (catching every possible match). For some users, that's exactly right. For most, it isn't.

How we actually use TinEye

For our own work, the workflow has become: try the big general-purpose engines first, drop down to TinEye only when we need a specific capability it offers. Specifically:

1. We start with our own reverse image search (which uses Google Lens) for any general lookup.
2. If we're trying to identify a person, we use Yandex — it does face matching that Google won't.
3. If we need to know the oldest version of a specific image, or we're doing a copyright audit, we use TinEye.

That's three tools for three different jobs. None of them alone covers everything.

The pricing reality

TinEye's free tier caps you at 150 searches per week. The paid tier starts at $200/year for individual use, and the API is enterprise pricing on top of that. For a hobby user, that's a lot. For a researcher or journalist doing serious work, it's still cheaper than building it yourself.

Google Lens and Yandex, by contrast, are free with no meaningful rate limits for normal use. If you're not specifically using a TinEye-only feature, the cost-benefit math points elsewhere.

The bottom line

TinEye is a great tool that does a specific job better than anything else. It's just not the right default anymore. For the 80% case — "where did this picture come from?" — the free, modern alternatives are more useful. For the 20% case where you genuinely need the oldest-version tracking, TinEye is still worth the price of admission.
